There mainly two major kinds of chips in modern smartphones inside. There are more smaller also like Wi-Fi, PMIC, etc

One is called AP and other is called CP locally among engineers.

AP stand for Application processor and CP is Communication Processor (more commonly called as modem)

Many a times AP and CP are from different companies like AP from Qualcomm, TI, or Samsung and CP from Intel or Qualcomm.

Many newer chipsets (SOCs) have CP also reside inside the AP chip package only for e.g – newer Qualcomm Snapdragon chips. In this case AP and CP comes from same company.

Baseband is firmware that controls all radio devices on the phone, including GPS, wi-fi, Bluetooth, NFC, cell data and voice, etc. because these functions are highly regulated and certified, they are separate from the main operating system.

AP software version is characterized by the Android version and kernel version.

CP software version is characterized by Baseband version. Its the version of CP’s OS
