Samsung brand ambassador sued for $1.6 million after she used iPhone at event

Xenia Sobchak was hired by Samsung to market its smartphones in Russia.

What happens when you are the brand ambassador for Samsung, but use an iPhone in public? You get sued by the South Korean tech giant.

Xenia Sobchak was hired by Samsung to market its smartphones in Russia. The TV presenter, journalist, and politician was contracted to use the smartphones in public. Under the terms of similar agreements between companies and influential people, they are not typically allowed to be seen using competing products in public, a rule that Sobchak broke.

Although, it is not odd for celebrities to endorse Android products using an iPhone, Samsung decided to take things rather seriously and sue their own brand ambassador for nothing less than $1.6 million.

Reality TV show host and politician Xenia Sobchak is the face of Samsung in Russia, and is required by contract to use a Samsung smartphone.

However, while appearing in an interview, she was spotted using an iPhone X. She really made an effort to disguise it, but failed to do so. The actress was seen using a piece of paper to try to hide the phone from view, but plenty of people noticed, soon promoting widespread discussion on social media.

It can be further noted that this is not the first time that the actress was using the iPhone, she has been spotted at multiple social occasions with the Apple phone.

The numerous sightings has led to Samsung suing Sobchak for breach of contract. It is unknown how much Sobchak was originally paid by Samsung, but it is likely the suit's claimed damages are far higher in value, including penalties for breaking the agreement.

Closer home, Twitterati spotted actress Anushka Sharma promoting Google’s Pixel 2XL using an iPhone. Sharma shared two photos of herself with a dog on Twitter tagging Google India and using the hashtag #TeamPixel and #Pixel2XL. “Look at this lovely boy,” she wrote. However, the tweet tagged itself as “Twitter via iPhone”.
