Weird. Airtel, Jio, Vodafone all supports RCS now. You should be able to activate. But it could be Airtel specific issue for now. Try again after a few days after clearing cache and data for messages app.

This happening with most of the Airtel users (including me) and mostly with the users who reset their device or just port to airtel (including sim lost or sim break).
