Galaxy SSpotted by Twitter user Ice universe, Samsung announced new AMOLED display technology during its OLED Forum conference in China. During the event, Samsung explained the display could hide several features which for now require display cutouts or bezel space. These features include a fingerprint scanner, haptics, sound, and an under panel sensor (UPS).
In-display fingerprint sensors are nothing new, though they are rumored to be part of the upcoming Galaxy S10. The exciting bit is the UPS, which would include the front-facing camera. Combined with the ability for sound to transmit through the display, Samsung effectively said there would soon be no need for notches. EDITOR'S PICK Samsung Galaxy S10: All the rumors in one place (Updated October 8) Samsung remained quiet on other aspects of its new display technology. We do not know if the new displays will support facial recognition, whether the sound transmitted through the display would be through bone conduction or something else, or when we will see the new displays. We could see the new displays as soon as early 2019 with the Galaxy S10, though they could also debut on the Galaxy Note 10 later in the year. We could also see them on other devices, since manufacturers like Oppo, Xiaomi, and Apple purchase displays from Samsung. Regardless of where the technology ends up, the idea of more notch-less phones with slim bezels could make for some compelling designs.
