Hard reset is usually done to resolve software issues.
Before performing a hard reset, make sure you create a backup of your important files otherwise you'll lose them permanently. That's the only risk I can think of.
Apart from backup, hard reset takes time. Be patient while it's happening, sometimes it restarts to complete the process and screen appears after few secs don't start pressing power key and interrupt the process.
