Hello Samsung Members and community,

I’m posting here out of frustration and hope. I own a Samsung Galaxy S22 (model SM-S901E), and the phone has started lagging so badly that it’s almost unusable — even in Safe Mode. I’ve gone through nearly every fix I could find, including factory resets, firmware flashing, and app optimization. Still, the phone freezes, especially when I open the camera or try to navigate quickly.

Let me walk you through everything I’ve tried so far in detail, so you know this isn’t a minor issue:

What I’ve Already Tried:

I performed a full factory reset from recovery mode.

Cleared the cache partition multiple times.

Updated all apps through both the Galaxy Store and Google Play Store.

Booted into Safe Mode to rule out third-party apps — but the lag was still there.

Cleared cache and data of the One UI Home system launcher.

Flashed the official One UI 6.1 firmware using Odin (clean flash).

Later, flashed One UI 7 using the CSC file (not Home_CSC), which completely wiped all partitions for a fresh install.

Did not restore any old backup — I only installed essential apps like WhatsApp, a payment app, and Snapchat.

Ran the Samsung Members diagnostics — which reported no hardware issues.

Tried Nova Launcher to see if the lag was launcher-related. While it helped a bit, the lag was still very present.

Booted into Safe Mode again to double-check — and the phone was still slow and unresponsive.

The camera in particular lags or freezes the whole system when I open it. Sometimes it takes 5 to 10 seconds just to open the camera interface.

The phone is now out of warranty.

Knox has been tripped, but I don’t use Samsung Pay or Secure Folder, so that’s not a concern for me.

Current Symptoms:

The phone lags all over the UI — System UI often stops responding. Even when doing simple tasks like opening the settings or camera, there are massive delays. This is happening even after a clean flash, with no apps installed and no background processes.

What I Think Might Be the Problem:

At this point, I strongly suspect this is a hardware-level issue. It could be degraded UFS 3.1 storage — which might explain the slow read/write behavior, especially when opening the camera or switching apps. It might also be the RAM or SoC beginning to fail due to long-term heat exposure or throttling. Another possibility is that the ISP (Image Signal Processor) is failing, since the camera seems to freeze or crash the UI often. Lastly, it could be a deeper mainboard issue that flashing can’t fix.

My Main Questions:

Should I just replace the phone completely?

Would flashing a lightweight custom ROM like LineageOS 21 or Pixel Experience help improve performance by removing One UI and reducing system load?

Since my phone is out of warranty, is it possible (and cost-effective) to replace the internal UFS storage or RAM at a chip-level repair shop in India?

Should I wait for One UI 8 to release and see if Samsung fixes this issue through optimization?

I don’t mind losing Samsung features like Samsung Pay or Knox — I just want the phone to be usable again for another year, mainly for calls, messaging, banking, and casual use. I’m looking for the cheapest, most effective solution to extend the life of the device.

If anyone else has experienced this or has gone through something similar — whether you fixed it with a ROM, repair, or upgrade — please let me know. If you’re a technician or developer, I’d really appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks for reading, and I hope this post helps others too. If there’s any way to bring my S22 back to life, even with a slimmed-down Android experience, I’m willing to try.

A frustrated S22 user trying to extend my phone’s life and avoid more e-waste
