Hi Members,

You may already know that your phone can analyze a photo and understand what's in that photo. For example it can distinguish between landscapes, flowers, animals, humans and emotions etc.

It can also recognize faces in a photo. Let's see an example.

In the below photo, gallery already identified it's a portrait. Once identified, the app will show a "people" button on the top which is highlighted in the photo. Once you see that icon you can click it to add the persons name.
image
Once you click on the icon, a new window will open. You can either select a contact as name or you can manually type the name.
image
After you save the name, you can see the name of the person near the face. Tap on the face to hide or show the saved name.
image
If you tap again on the name, all the photos with similar face will be shown. I have added name to only one photo, but all the 262 photos with similar face got tagged automatically.
image
You can also add or view names by clicking on the search icon.
image
My phone have already detected around 112 faces, you can add more names and it will be easy for you to search for photos.

It's a very handy feature right?

Yes handy, if there were documentation, or instructions to find.  There is no "people" button on portraits or even on pics with faces already tagged.  Automatically detected faces can be identified.  But most are not detected.  No apparent way to tag undetected faces.  Doesn't appear to be an option.  As for "Swipe up on a photo and you can tag faces from there", - tags like "Gallery", "Pattern", "Textile" can be added, but a face cannot be tagged by name.

On my s10e, the version of gallery does not have the people icon on picture screen.  Gallery app indicates i have up to date version. Why am i not seeing that option?

Thanks

is there a way to do this on a galaxy a42? (5G edition--if that matters) my gallery auto-creates groups of photos with the same faces, and i am able to tag those faces via the group. ex-

however, i am unable to tag directly from a photo. here is an example of a photo that was auto-tagged via the "Buck" group, along with a photo that clearly has a person's (uncovered) face in it, which does not have the ability to tag a face in.

i also don't have the button (next to the bixby vision icon) that op showed, & i'm intrigued as to why that is. here is an example of what the buttons on a photo look like. this photo has a face tagged in it already (via a group, again)

i apologize for the very long comment and all the brightly colored stickers!! gotta keep this as anonymous as possible, lol.  thanks for reading!!

After a recent update, face taging directly from the top menu is removed. You have to select an auto tagged photo and then you have to tap on the name to edit it. Unless a face is automatically detected and grouped, you can't manually tag it. Also, if you swipe up on a photo, if there is a recognizable face in the photo, you will get an option to tag it.
