With Live focus the main object gets highlighted and the background gets blurred...but you should keep the camera at least 1.5mts away from the object to get the best result.The camera prompts you to do so if you are very near to object

Live focus adds depth of field to pictures, creating a tighter focus on close objects and blurring objects further away. It is a nice artistic feature. Perhaps the reason it wasn't apparent on the picture you provided is that the background objects are not far enough away to properly create the effect.
