Always on Display is a feature supported natively by Super Amoled displays because they can only use the pixels that need to display each word or letter. They keep every other pixel off. This will not consume a lot of battery.
If this is done on a LCD screen, the whole screen needs to be on for this to work, which will consume more battery.
Even though the screen appears to be black, it will still be on. So samsung doesn't allow LCD phones to have this.
With that being said there are apps on the playstore that can give u a similar AOD experience.
