The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Sohar is a magnificent architectural landmark in Oman. It was inaugurated in October 2016 and is known for its stunning blend of Islamic, Omani, and Persian architectural styles. Here are some key features:
Location: The mosque is situated in the heart of Sohar, near the Al Suwaihra roundabout, directly opposite HM’s Bahjat Al Anthar Palace.
Design: It features a large garden, three main entrances, four minarets, and a striking blue main dome. The interior is intricately designed with subtle colors, and the mihrab is beautifully tiled in a turquoise and gold palette.
Capacity: The main prayer hall can accommodate over 4,600 worshipers, with a separate area for women that can hold up to 740 worshipers.
Facilities: The mosque also serves as a cultural and social hub, with a public library, classrooms for Islamic studies, a multi-purpose hall, and a majlis for hosting social events.
The mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors from 8 AM to 11 AM, Saturday to Thursday. If you plan to visit, make sure to dress conservatively
