Yes, it is South India, but not Mudumalai National Park.
The Palakkad Gap is a massive low mountain pass in the Western Ghats between Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and Palakkad in Kerala.
Geologically, it is a significant break in the otherwise continuous mountain range. While the peaks on either side—the Nilgiri Hills to the north and the Anamalai Hills to the south—reach heights of over 2,000 meters, the gap itself sits at an elevation of only about 140 meters.
Key Characteristics of the Palakkad Gap The "Gateway": It serves as the primary gateway between the west coast and the interior of the Deccan Plateau, facilitating both rail and road transport (National Highway 544). Climatic Impact: Because it is a 30-40 km wide break, it has a major influence on the local climate. It allows the Southwest Monsoon winds to reach the interior of Tamil Nadu and helps cool the otherwise hot plains of Coimbatore. Scientific Significance: In ecology and biogeography, the gap is studied for its role in "speciation." It acts as a barrier for some flightless birds and small mammals, leading to distinct genetic variations in species found on either side of the pass. :- GEMINI
