The Galaxy A70 does not offer a pop-up camera like the Galaxy A80, but it still carries that premium look and feel for a mid-range smartphone, and it may launch in India soon enough. Sanket Vijayasarathy Bangkok April 11, 2019UPDATED: April 11, 2019 12:55 IST Samsung Galaxy A70 HIGHLIGHTS Galaxy A70 went official few days go, but Samsung used the "A Galaxy Event" stage on Wednesday. The Galaxy A70 went official few days go, but Samsung used the "A Galaxy Event" stage on Wednesday to announce it alongside the Galaxy A80. The Galaxy A80 was understandably the star of the event in Bangkok with its unique rotating camera and al-screen display, but the Galaxy A70 packs a punch as well. The Galaxy A70 does not offer a pop-up camera, but it still carries that premium look and feel for a mid-range smartphone. More importantly, chances are that the Galaxy A70 may launch in India ahead of the Galaxy A80. Samsung has already launched the Galaxy A10, Galaxy A20, Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 in India, which would make the Galaxy A70 a logical next launch for the company in the country, although the company hasn't confirmed this yet. At the sidelines of the event, I managed to get a quick look at the Galaxy A70 and its large Infinity-U display, glasstic design, triple camera setup and more. Here are my first impressions of the device. The Galaxy A70 is more or less similar to the Galaxy A50 that is already selling in India, at least from a design perspective. Samsung has a clear design philosophy for its Galaxy A-series phones this year and that is to offer a tall, immersive display with a curved glasstic design, some gradient colours and possibly an in-display fingerprint sensor. The Galaxy A70 follows these cues to the dot. The power button is placed near the middle of the frame, which is perfect for a phone this big. It's funny that Samsung couldn't do the same with the Galaxy S10+. Samsung is offering the Galaxy A70 in Black, Blue, Coral and White colours. The colours have a slight gradient, prism effect and you'll notice the rainbow-coloured patterns when looking at it from certain angles. The rear panel is clean except for Samsung's branding and a triple camera setup. Another similarity with the Galaxy A50 is that the Galaxy A70 also gets an optical in-display fingerprints sensor, which is something you can expect to see on mid-range to premium Samsung phones moving forward. Like the Galaxy A80, the Galaxy A70 also sports a large 6.7-inch display, but the difference is that it doesn't get the New Infinity notchess display. The Galaxy A70 uses an Infinity-U display with a waterdrop notch to house the selfie camera. The display offers a FHD+ (2400x1080) resolution that looks sharp and vivid. Colours on screen look saturated and vibrant with the display setting kept in Vivid by default. The Galaxy A70 is a big phone, which makes it difficult to reach the top of the screen with one hand. Luckily, One UI's new interface makes it easy to complete most tasks and navigate the UI with one hand. You also get Night mode that turns the background of the UI pitch black, which looks really attractive on Samsung's AMOLED displays. Powering the Galaxy A70 is a 2.0Ghz octa-core chipset paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Unlike the Galaxy A80, the Galaxy A70 allows for storage expandability up to 512GB via a microSD card. Samsung hasn't clearly mentioned the chipset it is using, but it could be a Snapdragon 670/675 chipset. Whatever chipset Samsung is using, it seems to be one of the more powerful mid-range processors as the device felt snappy and fast while opening apps and browsing through the UI. Of course, without testing it intensively for its gaming and multitasking performance, it's hard to say how the device will hold up in day-to-day usage. As one would expect, the Galaxy A70 comes with a triple camera setup that includes a 32MP primary camera with f/1.7 aperture, an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera and a 5MP depth camera. The primary camera should offer some detailed photos, but I couldn't test the cameras out in my brief interaction so it's hard to say for sure. The Galaxy A-series this year has been about offering large batteries for all-day usage. The Galaxy A70 gets one of the biggest batteries in this series with a 4,500mAh capacity. This should easily take the phone through a full day, maybe more, but it is something we can only know for sure after an in-depth analyses. Overall, the Galax A70 offers a good set of specifications and follows a similar path as the Galaxy A50. The A70 isn't as experimental with its design as the Galaxy A80, but this is also reassuring. On first impressions, the winning traits of the Galaxy A70 seems to be the design, AMOLED display and a large battery. Samsung is yet to confirm the launch of the Galaxy A70 in India, but it could be just a matter of a few weeks.
