Samsung has a handful of affordable phones in India right now. The company has been rapidly expanding its portfolio this year, launching the Galaxy M-series in January and a revamped Galaxy A-series in February. The Galaxy A20 joins a pretty crowded portfolio of affordable Samsung phones, and it is inevitable that the phone will overlap with a few existing Samsung devices. Once the Galaxy A20 goes on sale starting April 10, consumers are going to have to decide between it and the Galaxy M20, for example. The Galaxy A20 and Galaxy M20 are priced close to each, which begs the question of how the two phones compare. We help break it down for you.
The Galaxy M20 comes in two variants with the base model starting at Rs 10,990. This is the version with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The second variant with a 4GB + 64GB configuration is priced at Rs 12,990. The Galaxy A20 is priced similar to the top-end variant of the Galaxy M20.
The Galaxy A20 has been launched at Rs 12,490 in India. It only comes in a single 32GB storage version paired with 3GB of RAM. Both the phones are offered in Blue and Black colours, but the Galaxy A20 gets an extra Red colour option as well.
Samsung Galaxy A20 vs Galaxy M20: Design and specs. The Galaxy A20 shares similar design traits with the Galaxy M20. Both the phones sport edge-to-edge Infinity-V waterdrop displays on the front and a 3D glasstic rear panel. They both come with a fingerprint sensor on the back and dual camera setup on the top left corner. They also come with a Type-C port, 15W fast charging support and headphone jack. When it comes to the display, the Galaxy A20 gets a slightly bigger 6.4-inch screen compared to the 6.3-inch screen on the M20. The A20 also gets a Super AMOLED panel which should offer vibrant colours and deep blacks as Samsung's panels are known for. The Galaxy M20 gets an LCD panel, but it benefits by delivering a sharper FHD+ (2340x1080) resolution as opposed to the HD+ (1560x720) resolution on the Galaxy A20. Additionally, the Galaxy M20 is Widevine L1 certified for HD streaming, while Samsung is yet to confirm the same for the Galaxy A20.
The Galaxy M20 also gets a chipset advantage over the Galaxy A20. While the the Galaxy A20 gets a 1.6GHz Exynos 7884 processor, the Galaxy M20 is powered by a faster and more capable 1.8GHz Exynos 7904 SoC based on a 14nm process.
When we reviewed the Galaxy M20, we said the Exynos 7904 offers a smooth performance and is capable of running games like PUBG without hiccups in its default graphic settings. At Rs 12,999, the M20 also gives you a little more memory and twice the storage as the Galaxy A20. Both the phones support storage expandability up to 512GB via a microSD card.
Notably, the two phones share the same camera setup. The dual camera system on both the phone include a 13MP primary camera with f/1.9 primary sensor and a 5MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle camera. They also come with a similar 8MP front-facing camera.
When it comes to battery, the Galaxy M20's massive 5,000mAh is capable of taking you through two days on a single charge. The Galaxy A20, on the other hand, houses a smaller 4,000mAh battery, but it is still significant and should deliver over a full day worth of battery life.
Lastly, the Galaxy A20 gets an edge in software as it has been launched with the latest One UI based on Android 9 Pie. One UI, as you may know, offers a redesigned interface with a focus on offering interactive elements on the bottom half of the screen for easy one-handed use. One UI also brings a system-wide dark mode. The Galaxy M20 ships with Android Oreo with Experience UI 9.5 on top.
