Galaxy AThank you for contacting us.
Please follow the troubleshooting steps below to address your concern. After completing the steps, check whether the issue has been resolved or if it still exists.
The "dot" you are seeing is the App Icon Badge, a standard Android feature that alerts you to unread notifications or messages. You can turn this off either system-wide or specifically for the Messages app.
Option 1: Disable Notification Dots/Badges Entirely
This will remove the dot from all app icons on your home screen and app drawer, not just the Messages app.
-
Open the Settings app on your phone.
-
Tap Notifications.
-
Tap Advanced settings (or directly locate the option, depending on your One UI version).
-
Find App icon badges and toggle the switch to Off.
Option 2: Disable the Dot Only for the Messages App
If you want to keep the dots for other apps but remove them only for Messages, follow these steps:
-
Tap and hold the Messages app icon on your home screen or app drawer.
-
Tap the small “i” (information) icon in the pop-up menu to open the App Info screen.
-
Tap Notifications.
-
Find and toggle App icon badge to Off.
A Note on the "Unread" Indicator inside the app
If the "dot" you are referring to appears inside the Messages app next to a specific unread conversation, it will disappear only when you open and view the new message(s). This indicator cannot be disabled, as it is a core feature for managing unread conversations.
Samsung is unlikely to remove the notification dot feature in future updates, as it is a widely used function of the Android system. However, using the steps above gives you full control over whether the dot appears on your app icons.
