Cannot respond to incoming security codes from my bank on my new A24

When I contact my bank (Nedbank) they send me a security code that says something like "Please confirm that this ????? is your request :

Press <1> to confirm

Press <9> to reject.

This comes in a black box on the bottom of my screen. I cannot access my keypad nor switch on the phone nor get a response to a screen touch. The only option that works is <Cancel> which is frustrating because I cannot complete my banking. 

How can I correct this fault.

Nedbank is not a Sri Lankan bank, right?

As per my investigations, it is a South African bank, and it is good to ask the question in the South African forum.
