Why does it seem like my Samsung Galaxy a35 suffers more on 120Hz than on 60Hz, specifically on viewing recent apps? It lags on 120Hz but smooth on 60Hz

The phone's gpu and cpu has to render more frames to push out 120fps per second.

To give the user 'n better and smoother experience. There might just be something hindering his device, like background apps, it's a budget device so the SoC's shipped with them aren't that powerfull so any small change in the amount of processes running at once or in the background on the phone will cause it to start to lagging and stuttering as it cannot push 120fps constantly.

In layman's terms, there's CPU GPU and Memory Bottleneck.
Heat is also a huge factor when it comes to lag and stutters.

Its not a budget phone but a midrange.I have budget phone that does not even lag much.

He should turn of all settings that prioritise battery life over performance like adaptive battery.

Note. His phone has a more powerful chipset than mine

Just slightly better value is given to "mid range" phones, so manufacturers can ask more money, but performance wise, the Exynos 1380 is no powerhouse.
The A35 5G has performance issues and heating issues in some of the reviews it's gotten.

What you suggest can definitely improve his experience, he should also take into consideration the resolution he is running to keep 120fps

Marketing buddy, it's simple marketing. Think you may want to ask Samsung why they do it.

While your at it, also ask laptop vendors why they still use Celeron CPU's in laptops knowing full well they suuck 🙄 If the consumer wants 120hz Samsung S series S - FE is your go to or A55 5G. No way a budget phone will give you 120hz without feeling a little struggle.
You wanna sound smart but actually come across arrogant
