Many thanks for your help, but before I do it, Would it erase any of the data on the device or harm it?

No it wont delete any data but make sure that to select wipe cache option NOT reset factory otherwise all your data will be deleted, and No it will not harm the device it will help the device to get rid of unwanted and unnecessary updates and applications junk files
