Lately, there has been a lot of hype surrounding dark mode, a simple toggle that lets you change the background color of an app window to black.

It has been initiated on many popular apps, as well as an optional theme on your smartphone. We can safely say: dark mode is here to dwell.

WHAT IS DARK MODE?

Dark Mode is a feature that lets you switch the color theme of an app or an entire desktop operating system to black or something close to it. Beyond the thrill of invigorating a tired design, some like to have the option because it makes looking at your devices a little easier on the eyes. If you use a smartphone that has an OLED display, it might save some battery life, too.

Battery Saving!!

Dark mode apps can prolong the battery life of your smartphone. Google has ascertained that using dark mode on OLED screens has been a huge help for battery life. For example, at 50% brightness, the Dark Mode interface in the YouTube app saves about 15% screen energy compared to a flat white background. At 100% screen brightness, the dark interface is saving a whopping 60% of screen energy. While OLED screens are mainly used by Android devices.

Looks Awesome!

Talking about its looks, well it's super amazing. While most products are going for that similar bland white look, the mode does offer something different that feels mysterious and new. It also provides great opportunities for presenting graphic content such as graphs, dashboards, pictures, and photos.

Everything has its cons too!!

It's quite tricky to pull off a good dark mode interface. One of its biggest problems is blurriness. For one, dark mode forces us to open our pupils more in order to capture the necessary visual information, which leads to reduced overall sharpness. Meanwhile, a light mode interface forces our pupils to close down and adjust to the increased brightness, which improves sharpness. Yes, that's basically how camera apertures work as well - wide-open apertures capture more light but aren't as sharp as a smaller aperture opening. This is why the dark text on a white background would generally appear sharper to your eyes.

Conclusion:

Regardless of all the proof, studies, and research that are available, using dark mode over light mode is ultimately a personal choice of each individual. No matter what the science says, if you like dark mode more, you're going to use dark mode. If you are a light mode person, sure, go ahead - the choice is yours. Personal preference rules king here furthermore.
