Once you’ve clicked a photo, it’s time to learn a few photo editing essentials to put the finishing touches on your artistic vision. Before we start, let us know

Why should you edit your photos?

It's not always that your picture is always ready to share. Sometimes there might be some tweaks required to make it better from original. Just a few simple tweaks can take your photos from meh to amazing!

Before we discuss about editing, one thing that we should keep in mind is:

What should you know while editing a photo ?

REMEMBER: Before you start, remember to start with a good base photo. That's why I recommend you to take multiple photos of same subject. Choose a good photo to avoid hectic work at later stages.

Here are the key steps for editing your photos:

1. Crop your images and clean those patchy spots.

Cropping an image is first and basic step of editing. It isn't always required but is necessary to compose a good frame.

It's always a safe step to clean those unwanted patches. It can be done on various photo editing apps.

2. Adjust white balance.

White balance sets the overall tone of your photo according to the atmosphere of photo.

3. Adjust exposure and contrast.

Adjusting Exposure: This is the process of making the photo exactly as bright or dark as you want.

Adjusting contrast: Contrast is the range of dark to light tones. When it’s extra high, you see a stark image, where all tones, regardless of color, are either very dark or very light. When it’s extra low, you see a flat image where no elements in the frame stand out.

4. Adjust color vibrancy and saturation.

Increasing vibrancy increases color intensity in neutral color tones and maintains color intensity in the brighter colors. Increasing saturation makes all colors throughout the frame more intense. When bright colors pop, it can give the photo a more dramatic look.

5. Sharpen images. (If Required)

Sharpening an image gives it a crisper, cleaner look. Experiment with your editing program's additional sharpening features to see the effect each produces. One you might try is a “clarity” or “structure” tool. It makes the edges of objects in the photo stand out more, giving the overall image a punchier look.

In addition, if you sharpen an image too much you can create an unnatural halo effect around objects in the frame.

Which apps do I recommend for editing photos ?

The basic editing can start from default editor. Where you can crop, straighten and change the perspective.

There are so many apps available on Play Store and Galaxy store for editing photos. But there are some most popular and powerful apps that are capable of doing all your editing works.

Recommended apps worth trying are:

Google Snapseed ✅ (free to use, powerful, simple)
Adobe Lightroom ✅ (Most powerful, custom presets, perspective and spot healing requires premium membership)
Adobe Photoshop Express ( many presets, can make collages and free to use )
PicsArt ( for casual editing, collages, stickers, premium version for more features )

What should you do after learning these basic steps ?

The next step is to experiment with these settings. There can be infinite variations of a single photo. The idea is to learn and experiment with these settings.
