Weight and Fat Management

Weight management programs have become an integral part of health monitoring services. Being overweight or having excessive fat are among the main causes of health deterioration. Obese people have higher chances of developing cardiovascular deceases. Moreover, while being overweight, it also becomes challenging to perform day-to-day physical activities and eventually a passive physical disability develops in body. So managing the right body weight and keeping the required amount of body fat leads to a healthier and productive life.

That’s why, along with regular workout, users must also be equipped with advance features on their fitness devices which can help them in monitoring day-to-day body fat so that they can keep away obesity and live a healthier life.

Samsung came up with such an advance feature named Body Composition in Galaxy Watch4.

What is Body Composition?

Body Composition is a method of the measurement of body fat in relation to lean body mass. It is the way to tell if you are losing body fat or gaining muscles. It describes the biological and chemical composition of human body in terms of fat, bones and water. It provides a detailed understanding of components of human body mass, it tells how physically fit a user is and indicates increased risk of certain chronic diseases.

How to measure Body Composition on Watch4?

The Galaxy Watch 4 uses the underside of user wrist and two fingers of the other hand. To measure Body Composition on the Galaxy Watch4, the user has to touch the Bioactive Sensors (shown in figure below) using two fingers such that the finger should not touch the skin / hairs. If any error happens during the measurement, then the user will be prompted with error alerts and adjustments can be made to resume the measuring. Before starting the measurement, Body Composition will ask about the user their gender, height and weight which are needed for the measurement. The user has to place the fingers on the Bioactive Sensors and stay still during measurement. Approximately, after a few seconds the results will be shown on the tracker user interface.

Following steps should be performed to use the Body Composition feature in the Galaxy Watch4

Refer screens below to measure Body Composition first time and follow the instructions given on the screen of your Watch. You have to place your middle and ring fingers on the Home and Back keys to begin measuring your Body Composition.

Subsequent measurement would show the following screens

Information provided by Body Composition Tracker

After measurement, result screen of Body Composition tracker shows the below seven parameters. The same information can be seen in detail on connected mobile devices.

Weight: Mass of human body weighted by a genuine weighing scale
Skeletal Muscle Mass:
1. Muscle mass indicates the weight of muscle in our body
2. Muscle mass is composed of 3 types of muscles: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle

Fat Mass: Body Fat Mass is the actual weight of fat in human body
Body Fat: It is percentage of Fat Mass to Weight
Body Mass Index (BMI): It is an approximate measure of mass distribution in a human body based on height and weight.

BMI = (weight in kg) / (height in meter)²

Body Water:
1. Total body water is the total amount of fluid in the body & represents amount of water contained in both cells and tissues
2. It includes the intracellular water and the extracellular water

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): The amount of energy per unit of time that a person needs to keep the body functioning while at rest.

Changes since last measurement are shown with up or down arrows for each Body Composition parameter

Ranges are defined to indicate whether Body Composition data lies in healthy ranges or not

You can also refer to the Samsung Health application on the mobile connected to the Galaxy Watch4 for Body Composition information

Note: Body Composition Tracker is only for monitoring purpose. However, if user’s overall reading raise red flags, then user should talk to their healthcare professional essentially.
